The device includes a motorized load frame with a capacity of 500 Newtons, designed to exert tensile forces of up to 250 Newtons. It features a uniquely crafted artificial jaw assembly that incorporates two cylindrical rollers, each with a diameter of 12.5mm ± 0.5mm, positioned with their longitudinal axes 76mm ± 2mm apart. An electronic controller outfitted with a force transducer allows for monitoring the force applied to the chin strap. Once the helmet is positioned on a wooden head form, securely fastened to a mounting fixture similar to that specified in ANSI, a tensile force is exerted at any variable speed up to 150 Newtons. Following this, the loading rate is regulated by a specially designed electrical module, which includes a DC motor and a DC amplifier featuring a potentiometer marked for adjustments.

The potentiometer’s knob is adjusted to a specific graduation marked for achieving a loading rate of 20 N/min. ± 2N until the anchorage fails. The electronic controller has a peak hold function that displays the force at which the failure occurs. This programmed controller features two adjustable set points and an editable timer. The machine will automatically halt at the first set point for a specified number of seconds inputted into the timer. During this pause, the user must adjust the potentiometer knob to the indicated graduation for the subsequent loading rate on the specimen.
